Spring Concert: A Celebration of Psalms

The Des Moines Vocal Arts Ensemble will close its season with “A Celebration of Psalms.” Western choral music is frequently composed to texts from Christian traditions, and this program features music written to Psalms, a majority of which are known as the “Songs of David.” The English word psalm is from the Greek word psalmos, which is a translation of the Hebrew word mizmor, meaning “song.” The Psalm 150 texts express a variety of emotions and have provided inspiration to composers from ancient to modern times. The concert will feature Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, a work commissioned for the Chichester (England) Choral Festival in 1965.
